My Story

Like many massage therapists, I found my calling after receiving profound healing at the hands of another massage therapist. With the lightest of touches, she took me on an inner journey where I felt neither here nor there, time had completely lost all meaning. It felt like I had been touched by an angel, and so I decided that I would like to try to do the same to help others.

Since starting my massage journey, I’ve often asked myself how a holistic massage with such a powerful medium for physical and emotional healing compared to a technical sports massage or a visit to a physiotherapist? Now, after a few years of working as a holistic therapist, this question has greater clarity, although I have a feeling that I will be searching for more answers about the mysteries of this healing art for the years to come.

Holistic massage as we know it today is a deep melting pot of ancient healing traditions from all over the world. As my passion for massage grows so does my knowledge of this practice. I am humbly discovering that we are using a thousand-year-old natural medicine that goes back 5000 years to the Ayurveda of India and Taoists of China through to the Buddhist temples of Japan, the imperial palaces of Thailand, and the indigenous islands of the Pacific.

The ancient traditions have several practices and traditions in common with the core desire to enhance longevity, wellbeing and to ultimately live well. They share an unwavering faith in intangible concepts of the universal life force within our body, these energies are known as Qi, Ki, Prana and Mana. When exploring these ancient concepts we gain a deeper understanding of our physical and emotional healing processes, which are inseparable, knowing this is the key to healing ourselves.

Meanwhile, in Europe, massage only truly emerged in the 18th Century with the development of Swedish massage which is based on a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology, and to emphasize clinical safety over and above intangible spiritual or energetic concepts. If we bridge these two worlds we arrive at the bedrock of modern holistic massage therapy today.

By uniting the practices of the East and Western systems we can take the opportunity to deliver healing in all its diversity; it is possible to relieve stress and anxiety, aches and pains, trauma, grief or end-of-life care. Massage not only teaches us to listen to the body but also connects us on a deeper level to its subtle energetic signals. It teaches us that we are more than just our pain, it does not define us. Massage is a gift that guides us to understand ourselves to our bones, ligaments, muscles, fascia, nerves, thoughts and emotions which are undeniably interlinked with the world around us. Holistic massage teaches us that we are not separate from the whole and that we are connected in many ways to the universal web of life. If we learn to listen we will discover that we are here to strive and live, to love well, and to practice peace love and compassion for ourselves and all living beings.

Holistic [ hoh-lis-tik ] incorporates the concept of holism, or the idea that the whole is more than merely the sum of its parts, in theory or practice.
